Matt Buckley

VP of Operations

Buckley grew up on Cape Cod where playing in the ocean and on the lakes was a way of life and a necessity of paying homage to the resource that gives life and livelihood to those who live there.

In 2000, Buckley moved out to the rockies with nothing but a desire to ski. It wasn’t long before his love of the mountains led him to rediscover water in a new environment. In 2006 Buckley began his career as a commercial river guide, quickly taking to the sport and becoming certified on class III through V whitewater. Buckley has made a habit of exploring the great river canyons of this country, and discovering himself within the history, geology, and whitewater of these wild and beautiful places.

The transition to SUP was a slow and organic process for Buckley. Over the course of a few years he dabbled a little in whitewater SUP, completed a solo self supported six day trip by SUP and paddled Westwater Canyon on an old inflatable touring SUP. SUP had proven its viability on the river to Buckley, and added fuel to the fire of his passion for the river. It was at this exact moment in his move towards SUP, that he was contacted by a long time friend he used to guide rafts with; Javier Placer.

With both feet, Buckley jumped in and began simultaneously learning and teaching the fundamentals and finer points of SUP. Buckley is now the River Manager and Lead Guide for SUPCO, an ACA level 3 certified SUP instructor, he is an ambassador and team athlete for Hala Gear, he competes in downriver and SUPcross races, and paddles advanced whitewater every chance he gets. SUP has changed the way Buckley looks at the water, and the world. He now gets to share that with others through Stand Up Paddle Colorado.
