Clinics

Ready to build real confidence behind the oars? Adrift Dinosaur’s Whitewater Rowing Clinics are designed for both beginner and intermediate rowers, with instruction tailored to each participant’s past experience. Led by Adrift’s professional river guides, these clinics emphasize experiential, hands-on learning, thoughtful progression, and sound risk management — all on some of the most beautiful and approachable whitewater in the West.

Whether you’re brand new to rowing, preparing for a longer wilderness trip, or refining existing skills, our guides meet you where you’re at. Instruction is adaptive and scenario-based, allowing participants to learn through repetition, real-time feedback, and practical problem-solving on the water. We intentionally integrate swiftwater rescue principles and decision-making throughout the clinic so skills are learned in context, not isolation.

During the clinic, you’ll learn and practice:

  • Rowing mechanics, boat control, and efficient maneuvering
  • Reading water, scouting rapids, and choosing safe, effective lines
  • Catching and leaving eddies, pushing and pulling, and wave positioning
  • Rigging systems, gear prep, boat spacing, and group management
  • Hydrology basics, river etiquette, and risk assessment
  • Flip prevention, self-rescue, and assisted rescue techniques (Z-drags, 3:1 self equalizing anchors)
  • Throw bag use, essential knots, and rescue communication
  • Camp skills, safety systems, and Leave No Trace ethics
  • Building confidence to make informed, conservative decisions on the water

Our teaching style is immersive, supportive, and rooted in professional guiding standards. With small group sizes and progressive terrain, beginners build a strong safety-first foundation while intermediate rowers refine efficiency, situational awareness, and leadership on the river. You’ll leave with not only improved rowing skills, but a deeper understanding of how to manage risk, respond to incidents, and make smart calls in dynamic whitewater environments — all within the welcoming, river-family culture Adrift Dinosaur is known for.

The rowing clinic delivered! It's ideal for private boaters looking to level up. It was full on (maximum value) and I slept like a frog in a log each night. Not only did we have ample practice rowing, setting ferry angles and catching eddies, we also spent time learning all the lil things like knots and boat rigging, vital to a smooth trip. Adrift made me feel welcome, able to fail and try again. It's the sort of active travel/learning trip that I crave. The crew was so patient and fun, the food was good and we even got some great acoustic jams at night. I highly recommend it.

Still reveling in the excitement and thrill of the rowing clinic—and will be for a long time. What a trip with amazing people, especially the guides. The Adrift crew welcomed us into their family and shared their love of the river and canyon, each adding their own touch—whether a kind word, a well-timed caution, or a welcomed high five. The learning environment was collaborative and safe, creating the opportunity to truly challenge myself. I had so many aha moments in rowing and navigation! As a lifelong learner, I found the Adrift family’s knowledge to be endless and would highly recommend re-organizing your life if needed to make sure you can fit this clinic in.

Sarah & Ned – Salida, CO, Gates of Lodore Intermediate Rowing Clinic Participant

The Adrift Team masterfully bestowed their indelible knowledge of river running during this 4-day clinic through the inspiring Gates of Lodore. I experienced a drastic improvement in my skills from reading water lines to timing eddie angles with proper momentum and eventually running class three rapids clean. The teachers created a safe environment where I could push my limits, achieve goals, and gain confidence. I highly recommend this course for anyone ready to level-up.
